  • A mountain top scene in north central Vermont- those stark trees dissolving into the misty background are right out fo the set of the Blair Witch set. Where is the moody music rising to a crescendo?

Bryan tells stories, with great vigor, passion, and deftly moving the axe from left hand to right to left, cradling it forward, and then tossing it back to the shoulder.

Am I even listening to the tale, or am I looking for the edge of the axe?

Of course I am listening, few tell tales with such conviction and sweetness and devotion... all from a guy flinging an axe.

That's but one thing that makes him special as a friend, the least fo which is getting to be with him on the land he loves and takes to be as much of him as he is of it.

When the axe man swingeth, just listen.

I am using Cowbird to share the story of a 15,000 mile road odyssey I took in 2011, which started with me quitting my job in March and setting out in June for a loop around the US and Canada. It's less of a day by day narrative and more of an attempt to tell a story of the story, with some amounts of imagined bits that emerge on looking at the media from the trip, including the more than 1400 images, videos, and audio files collected in my digital time capsule, the Storybox.
