  • He's a real "Nowhere Man"
    Sitting in his Nowhere Land
    Thinking all his nowhere plans
    For nobody

Doesn't Have a Point of View
Knows not Where He's Going To...

    - John Lennon

    Weep for yourself, my man,
You'll never be what is in your heart
    Weep Little Lion Man,
You're not as brave as you were at the start
    Rate yourself and rake yourself,
Take all the courage you have left
Wasted on fixing all the problems
That you made in your own head

    Tremble for yourself, my man,
You know that you have seen this all before
    Tremble Little Lion Man,
You'll never settle any of your scores
Your grace is wasted in your face,
Your boldness stands alone among the wreck
Now learn from your mother or else spend your days Biting your own neck

    - Mumford and Sons - "Little Lion Man"

It was very clear to me as soon as I looked at this picture, just who and what this pathetic creature was. I will call him "Gary".

Here is a small man - while not actually small in stature, he suffers terribly from "little man syndrome" - as do the women in his life (suffer from the fallout of his suffering). His need to assert himself, to stand taller in his ego, has an adverse impact on those around him, especially the women. He has this terrible need to make himself feel larger by making them feel smaller, making them beholden to him. While they struggle to be real, to be strong in their own right, he works overtime to undermine them, to make them feel they are in his debt, standing there in his smug, self-important comic-book world.

His is the worst kind of illness. It is born of self-righteous pride. He once had a strength that served himself and his community well. He was a natural networker. He believed in helping people, and he used his ability to "schmooze" to help further the causes that brought real healing to a certain segment of the community. This talent helped him move up the ladder in his field, and there his ego grabbed hold of his gift and slowly began to infiltrate the good that he did with an insidious poison. It became all about him, instead of being about them.

He went walking on the mountain trail, where he had a vision of greatness. He returned with a plan, and put his plan into action. The dominoes all fell into place, and he soon became king of his little world. His small, small world. Little Lion Man. Nowhere Man. Someone that we used to know. Where is the real Gary? Try phoning a friend. If you can find one. Plenty of phones - good luck finding a friend. He's not very real. A very sad story, of a very sad, and pathetic, man.
