  • Last year I quit my job (can't quite get enough of that story, eh?) and struck out on my own. My goals were twofold - to spend my time doing things that I love and to be able to spend as much time as possible with my family, especially as my daughter grows up. I was certainly fortunate that after I quit working on Wall St there were enough projects that I was interested in to choose from.

My new office is a 20 second commute - a short walk down the hall from my bedroom. I spend most of my days in front of a computer screen programming, with ample breaks to see my daughter and play with her. I try to get an early start each day because my wife gets home from work at 3:30 on most days, and our time together with Alexandra at the end of each day is more precious to me than the millions of dollars I could have made had I stuck it out on Wall St for another 5 or 10 years.

Some people think that working from home can be difficult, isolating, and present motivational difficulties. While my personality and skills are probably uniquely suited to this kind of environment, I also think that it's easy to be motivated when you're working on things that you love. It's doubly motivating when you're building something that (hopefully) makes a difference in people's lives and makes the world a better place, even in just a small way.
