  • 'Tears are secretions that clean and lubricate the eyes'.

Such a prosaic explanation for something so much a part
of our lives, a part of our emotions .Tears are an intrinsic
    part of all our experiences.
I remember with a smile all the tears I shed while reading
a book and watching a movie. We became so involved
with the characters, their emotions became our emotions.
And when we shed tears, there is also a sense of relief,
giving vent to our emotions. It is sad that boys are told
not to ‘cry like girls’:) So many grow up believing that
it is not correct to cry. Maybe, that is why many men
find it very difficult to express their emotions, women
    have no such inhibitions.
A good cry clears the mind and makes it possible to
look at life in a new perspective.

It is said all strong emotions bring tears to the eyes, but
generally we associate tears with pain and grief. Many a
times tears do not just fill the eyes but pour down. Maybe
that in itself makes the pain more bearable.
The other day we were all very pained to see the little girl
screaming with pain ,tears running down her cheeks. All of
us had tears in our eyes . She was about to be given her
medicines and before experiencing actual pain, its fear ,had
brought tears to her already drenched face. Her mother was
having a hard time consoling her. She was hugging her
daughter , but there were tears in her eyes, the pain had to
be suffered and endured by the little girl herself. There is
such a feeling of helplessness. But maybe that outburst of
tears helped the little child to bear the pain. But still,it is really
difficult to see the suffering of small children.

So often people relate personally to the incidents happening
in the story. The other day my friend was relating a scene
from a serial and there were tears in her eyes because she
had experienced similar incidents in her life.
Those tears helped her to understand that her experiences
were not unique but so much a part of real life that they
had become a part of reel life also.

Do we become more emotional as we grow older ? My
father-in-law says that he was never a one to show his
emotions earlier. But now, he has become very emotional
and tears fill his eyes more often. He is very surprised at this.
Maybe, as we grow older,we have more freedom and we
stop worrying about what others will think.

Rather than the rather tame explanation of tears I like this quote,
“ Perhaps our eyes need to be washed by tears once in a while,
so that we can see Life with a clearer view again”. Alex Tan
