  • For our 25th anniversary, we cruised the Baltic Sea. First, we spent a day and a half in Iceland on the way over, then we flew into Amsterdam and barely had time to make the ship before she pulled out - no time to enjoy the city. There was some kind of a big regatta going on that weekend.

After sailing the Baltic, with time in amazing cities - Berlin, Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Tallin, and Copenhagen, we came back to Amsterdam. Kathy had booked us a room in a little boutique Hotel right on the canal (actually, I guess they're all "right on the canal", eh?), so we got to spend a full day in this beautiful place.

It was the perfect cap to the best vacation ever. We rode the canals every which way, covering just about every square inch of Amsterdam via the canals.

The icing on the cake, though, was discovering that, because it was Friday, the Van Gogh museum would be open well into the evening, and there we spent the final hours of our finest journey, quietly absorbing the work of my favorite artist, as we walked through his life as it is displayed so beautifully in that structure. I felt like I got to know him.

A wonderful concert was being conducted on the main floor of the museum, adding a most appropriate soundtrack to the moment.
