  • Nellie told us on her post called " I Once Was a Corps Member" about the work done and the direction the job gave her. However, she did not mention the college tuition money she earned or the desk job work she got inside the agency for over a year she was given when health issues stopped her working outdoors with WA Conservation Corp WCC.

She helped run the program at the state Dept. of Natural Resources supporting the programs manager and helping the agency during fire season phone work. The federal funded program give money for her to use in finishing college costs. Over all she won grants for over 8,000 dollars - which has allowed her to take college classes the past four years - one at a time - mostly online while holding down a job ... and later while looking for a new job the past year.

There is money left to complete her AA degree this year and start study on a certificate program as a personal trainer ... later when she gets the BA completed - the career before her will continue to model the values this conservation program gave her right out of high school.

As her mom I enjoyed seeing her focus with the help of this program - WCC is rooted in CCC and YCC both programs have touched my life often over the past 40 years.

Nellie is planning to be a mom in a few years - she will be a great mom and I am sure she might suggest conservation work someday to her children too.
