  • The only manifestation of many in Stockholm on May 1st, that transcends the partisan lines of the labour/left wing parties and trade unions, takes place in the early morning.

It is the manifestation that commemorates the swedish voulonteers who went to Spain 1936-1938 to fight in the intenational brigades for Spains democracy in the civil war.

They were mostly young sailors and workers, many of them were members of the swedish communist youth league.

The manifestation takes place by the giant monument La Mano, raised on the heights overlooking the inlet to Stockholm, in memorial of those who didn’t return. The monument is a stone statue of a hand reaching for the sky.

    The inscription reads:

Out of 500 swedes that in the years 1936-38 fought for spains democracy, every third fell. They gave their utmost effort by Madrid, Jarama, Guadalajara, Brunete, Teruel, Aragon, Ebro. Wanderer, stop – remember them with pride.
