  • Ten days ago I attended the biggest congress of indigenous peoples communities in Indonesia, held in Tobelo city, in a beautiful island of Halmahera in Moluccas.

Moluccas (or in Indonesia we call it Maluku) --well known as "The Spice Islands", is a historical place for Indonesian peoples as it was the first place visited by the European in 16th century which started the history of colonialism of this archipelagic nation.

Despite centuries of dark colonial period by Europeans and Japan (Indonesians claimed its independence in 1945), the Indonesians in general are happy people. We are known for our cultural diversity, hundreds of exotic local languages, beautiful hand-made fabrics, folk songs and dances.

Since the post-colonial period until now, the indigenous peoples have been in struggle to make the government fully acknowledge their existence.

So during this congress, thousands of indigenous groups gathered to reinforce their existence and made a call to the government to be heard and to be acknowledged.

Hope their call will get through.
