  • My father was a philosopher. He didn't know he was. But he was.

    I can see that now.

    He said to me once: "I'm never wrong. Never. Ever. Never ever wrong"

    Then he thought for a moment, and added almost as an afterthought.....

    "Well I tell a lie. I was wrong....once. Only once. Once I got it very wrong."

    And paused for effect, before continuing:

    "..........well what I thought I'd done that was wrong, was actually right. So I was wrong."

    And then he would leave us to unravel the conundrum he'd just tied around our heads.

    And he would delight in telling we children:

    "You must always tell the truth. Always. Always. Always."
    "Because if you tell the truth, you can forget what you said immediately."
    "But if you lie, you must remember what you said for ever and ever and ever."

    And I have remembered that.
