  • I seem to have gone mad about cooking and baking at the moment. Not that I haven't always been mad about those things.

    Myself, my sister and my brother are all pretty competent cooks. Our father is a chef and talks about food a lot, taught us to make things since we were very young and both their mother and mine were decent cooks too and although my sister and brother are from dad's second marriage and were raised mostly separately, we were all raised with a great love of sharing meals with family, friends and each other on the now too infrequent occasions when we are together. It's not something we plan or talk about much, the food just sort of happens around us because it's part of us. We eat out or we eat in, but we connect through food a lot. I suppose cooking makes me feel close to them though they live in Wales now which is not very close for drop in dinners and visits.

    My mantra at the moment is "Health first, then everything else." so I've been eating better than usual, figuring home cooked meals are both more nutritious and cheaper. I've been home alone for about a week now, ostensibly getting some much needed rest, but in actuality I've been enjoying pottering about in the kitchen, which I haven't really done for a while. I've been exploring bread making and French home cooking.. two things that aren't my strong points, but I'm feeling inspired by a recent lavender and lemon glazed chicken that turned out well and my recent foray into beer bread.

    I'm not ready to leave my little cocoon of homemaking and go back to the real world yet. Next up, I want to get the hang of baking proper artisan bread. I've never really made bread that didn't turn out like a burned brick, but I found a new recipe and I'm feeling inspired.

    It feels a bit like I'm slacking off.. but the next time I have a film crew to feed, some of this may well come in handy!
