Some changes happen gradually and others all at once.

Recently, I stumbled into an all at once change. Without realizing it the DSTV bill did not get paid. I noticed the little red light and made the connection, no deposit, no service. Then we stopped a moment and thought. Why not go the next step and just pull the plug altogether.

We had been reading aloud recently instead of watching shows. 99% of the time after scanning the channels we ended up deciding there was actually nothing on anyway. I watched TV while I rowed but I had just got an iPod.
So we did, we pulled the plug.

The TV is dormant now. It will take longer to roll it out of the room than it did to terminate its service, so for the moment it bears mute testament to the change in our lives. And the change is real. We went to a nearby used bookstore to choose the next read aloud. All those classics we never got around to reading, well we are reading them now. We have found our conversation is taking completely unexpected and interesting turns now. There is only so much you can say about a TV drama or action series but the choice of topics from A Farewell to Arms is astounding. I listen to music while I row now instead of the news and my thoughts are liberated.

Suddenly there is time for many things that never seemed to fit into the rush of our days. Some changes happen gradually and some all at once. Pull the plug and see for yourself.
