  • I found this lonely bicycle light in a puddle of water by the sidewalk, late last friday evening. It kept blinking, even though it was under water. The rain poured down, but the little red light blinked on, even though no one cared about it.

This morning I realized why I sometimes just can’t tell a single story here on cowbird. When I try to write, it doesn’t work for me. The words I put down seem untrue, ridiculous.

Suddenly I realized, it’s the love factor. When the stories are graded by the community, by a count of little hearts with arrows, it’s very difficult for a competitive soul not to compete.

I love to compete. Normally, I compete in everything. Lot of the times, I’m the only one that knows about the competition, (makes it easier to win).

That’s not why I’m here, though. What I love about this space is the freedom of storytelling without any other purpose than that.

But listening to your inner voice is hard, when there is someone on your shoulder trying to have you compete. You shouldn’t write that, she says, they won’t love that. See, they didn’t love this story, they loved that one. Write more stories like that one. Look, she says. People who love this: one, two, three, four…

I’m not listening to her. And the days I can’t keep her silent, I won't write anything.
