  • Rosie was warm, inviting, and full of personality from the moment I sat in her chair. We chatted like old friends and I was fascinated to hear how she had moved to Illinois from Ireland to bartend at my favorite Irish Pub.

When I asked her how she came to be a hair stylist, Rosie shared how she has always wanted to give back, to impact people’s lives, and how she didn’t feel like bartending was fulfilling that desire. She talked about growing up in a poor family in Ireland and how as a little girl, it made her feel so special when her family was able to afford a haircut. From a very young age, she knew she wanted to give back in this way.

Then Rosie started telling me how one way she loves to help others is by volunteering at Lazarus House, the homeless shelter in our community. Every month, she goes there with her tools and one by one, cuts each person’s hair.

Rosie’s eyes lit up as she told me about the time she spends there. She talked about the first time she went, how the people were hesitant and cautious. They had been hurt and used so many times before that they were reluctant to trust someone who claimed to want to help them. But Rosie was consistent, and came back month after month with a humble spirit and an eagerness to serve.

At Lazarus House, Rosie uses her passion for cutting hair to intentionally build relationships; seeking to know each person on a deeper, more significant level. She is there for the important moments in their lives, helping them feel special as they prepare for interviews, family visits, and trips to the store. She’s also there for the day-to-day, spending her Saturdays off to eat lunch with them and invest in their lives as an equal.

I learned so much during my hour with Rosie. She embodies everything I want the Change of Pace 5K to be. She doesn’t just show up at Christmas, serve a meal, and leave. She has recognized the importance of consistent, reliable, compassionate action. She builds relationships and has proven that she’s in it for the long haul.

Rosie is using what she loves to change the world; restoring dignity, spreading love, and impacting lives. And that’s what this is all about.
