  • Last summer my country went a little crazy.
People decided that rioting and looting would be the most appropriate way to express their anger.

The day after the worst of the riots in London, one of my best friends and I went there on holiday.

This was something we’d planned for a while because there were lots of exhibitions we wanted to see, so we thought it would make sense to stay for a couple of days rather than travelling backwards and forwards.

We never really considered not going, even though there was a chance we could get caught up in the violence. There was an element of defiance; that we wouldn’t let these people ruin our summer. Also, we’d already paid for everything, and being students we weren’t going to waste the money.

    London was strange that week.

The rioting moved out to other cities, so we were safe. But there were definitely fewer people around than you would expect in August. Everything was quieter, holding its breath maybe.
    Especially at night.
The shops shut earlier, and I think perhaps some of the bars were closed too.

But for us it was good. The art galleries and museums weren’t full of people, getting in the way of that art. We could geek out to our hearts content.

The weather was nice and we had a perfect holiday.

    Funny how things work out.
