  • The pressure was great.

I was to attend my Mother in Laws (MIL's) 60th birthday party, in her garden, with all those who she had created in some way, with a cake. When my husband dropped this little 'oh by the way honey...' I had about 22 hours and 34 mins to whisk up a creation. I dont though 'create'. I am not artsitic nor do I have the patience for perfection. But of all the things at a party, this cake was going to be visually judged by all. Hell.

So I set to work on that cake. Attempt one, didnt rise............ Attempt two.......... I over cooked as my neighbour knocked to tell me that I was not to worry if I didnt see her cat for 2 days as she was having surgery. Attempt three............ broke and became a little soggy under my tears. But Attempt 4, that was the winner. 16 hours of my life went into making that cake.

That cake was carried by me and only me to the party. It was mine. We had a bond.

I compiled the finishing touches to that cake in the study at my MIL's. But it was such a hot day the cream would not whisk. I battled though the heat. I whisked and 33 minutes later we had whipped cream and perfectly cut strawberries.

"Ah wow, the cake looks amazing" the guests babbled.

"Oh thanks, it was just something I threw together, I wish I had had more time, you know it is..."

    That bloody cake.
