  • I walk from my school to the train station. This is a day in which my interactions after school have been reduced to minimal dilly-dallying, and I am walking alone.

There is a man walking in the opposite direction from me, and I smile at him. This man- 60 years old, he is, maybe 65- nods and says hello and then stops. With perhaps a bit of an Irish brogue and a wide, delighted smile, he says, "It is a good day for the race!" The race? "The race?" "The race, the human race! It's is a good day for the human race!"

This is so queer, so wonderful, that I cannot seem to stop smiling.

It is a good day for the human race.
