  • The New England Web Developers Association had a networking event tonight with some speakers. They called it, Presentations of Passion! or POP! Not a member, but I was invited to speak about writing. The organizer called my presentation "Word Smithing in the 21st Century."

So I opened by telling everyone that I did not choose the title, that I would never use a phrase like word smithing, and that I let him use that title because he seemed to like it so much.

Way to go, girl. Use the organizer, the man who invited you at that, as the opening joke to ease your anxiety. And I was indeed anxious. I hate standing in front of a whole roomful of people, or 35 tonight. What can I tell them that they don't already know? Can I hold their attention for 5 minutes? Because, let's face it, at a networking event, they really just want to know what beer is on tap and what's for snacks.

At the end of it, I did okay, got a couple of requests for my business card, and a few glasses of ice water... Anyone need a powerpoint on writing?
