That echo in my ears has finally stopped. Damn. I really need to get that checked. Too many years of too many decibels. Everybody’s starting to gear down from the show. Passed out’s a better term. Pretty good night though. ‘Bout half the room filled, sold about 35 CDs and a two dozen t-shirts. For a Tuesday night, not bad. Not bad at all. I gotta get some sleep.

What the hell is that sound? Sounds like we’ve got an unbalanced tire. Weird. It’s rolling at the same tempo as the conga drum on intro of Symphony for the Devil. Da, da, dadaddada. Da da dadadada. I wonder if we could do that song without it sounding like a bunch of has-beens? Da Da, dadadada. Well, actually, a bunch of never-were’s. Except for two weeks in 2003, and three glorious weeks in 2007. Need to get that tire looked at next stop.

Somebody’s got Chet Baker on. I can hear that horn through their headphones somewhere back in the bus. Nothing cooler, except maybe Miles on Kind of Blue or Mose Allison. He’s right. Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy, and they don’t know the meaning of the word. Reminds me of early morning refusing to give in to a late night.

    6:30 am

I need to get some sleep. It’s just about daylight. Where the hell are we anyway? We’re on our way to Somewhere, Ohio. All the Lilacs in Ohio. Man, I just want to write one song like John Hiatt. One would be enough. Just let me write one song like Have a Little Faith in Me.

Dammit. It’s light out there. Is he ever gonna stop and get some fuel for this rig? We need to sell a helluva lot more t-shirts tonight to pay for the diesel not to mention all the crap we eat on the road. In fact, I better check the credit card. It’s runnin’ on empty too. I really need to get some sleep.

What time is it? Has anybody got beer? And where’s that fabulous performance venue that promises to be packed with coked-up, drunken college kids and working stiffs who got nothing better to do on a Wednesday night than to hear the hits. Jim, Greg, anybody? Can we please change the set lists tonight? Maybe play something from this decade?

No YOU shut the hell up!

I gotta get some sleep before the gig.
