  • I am the hated obese.

    Once, I was hungry.

I lived on the streets in New York and had nothing, no shoes, no clothes but the rags on my back. I begged for food. I did not drink, but many people refused to help me. They said, "Why should I give you money when you will just buy a drink?" They did not believe me when I told them that I did not drink.

One man bought me a piece of pizza. He said, "if I buy you pizza and watch you eat it, I will know you are not drinking away the money I gave you."

That pizza was the first thing I had eaten in a week. It was the last thing I ate for another week.

Now I am fat. Everyone hates fat people. I would prefer to not be fat. I would like to be lean and healthy. But I do not seem to be able to not eat, as people have suggested.

    I still don't drink.

    Mary Stebbins Taitt

location: I am in Detroit, and there are many hungry people here. This story happened in NYC.

image: I cannot figure out how to add an image from the iPad, so I will have to add one later.

date: I dated it today, but the hunger occurred in 1965. I am a slow healer, apparently.
