  • I spend a lot of time in the park here, in a variety of different parks. There are the ones that have clearly been adopted by young families, others, young lovers and dog walkers, this one, the older, more leisurely crew. I share benches with cats, closely observe the progress of ants carrying large leaves on their backs, pretend to read books for class while quickly becoming distracted by my surroundings. I secretly root for the success of certain card players, generally according to the kindness of their smile. It's curious and delightful, the way each chess aficionado brings his own board and pieces carefully tucked in a plastic department store bag. The way one can count on afternoon tea and pastries arriving by bicycle.
