  • I decided to take the Sunday boat to Athens. I would leave and return on Thursday to stay for a week . It was not a long time I just had to go to work for a few days and I’d be back with him , said the voice in my head. I booked my return ticket to Heraklion as soon as I got to the port.
    The boat to Athens was relatively empty ,a few people visiting their families and some men who had finished collecting their olives. It was late October. The sea was calm. It was raining but the wind was'nt strong. I managed to sleep on a sofa throughout the night.
    We arrived at Piraeus at 6.00 o clock, it was still dark outside and still raining . I took a taxi home thinking that Thursday was three days away. I had time for a quick shower before work and for breakfast. At 7.30 I took the car heading to work. I was driving when I heard something ringing louder than the voices in my mind. It was my sister on the phone “ Dad died last night " she said "His oxygen was very low, he died in his sleep" Everything paused “You have to take the first plane home” she continued.
