  • Great Aunt Vera went to the other side last week. She was 96. This is a drawing my mom did of her a few months ago. Forever and ever I will remember sharing a motel room with her in California for the 2001 family reunion. In the middle of the night I heard a froggy old voice say: "One, two, three...Jack of diamonds, ten of spades...I think I'll have another drink." It was sort of scary in the dark unfamiliar room, the voice and my insomnia. But the truth was Aunt Vera loved cards and homemade wine so much she spoke of them in her dreams.

I will also remember that capri pants were at the height of department store fashion that summer. I will remember this because we bought Aunt Vera a pile of them. For the first time in her life the stores were carrying pants of the correct length. "And I don't even have to take these in!" Cried Vera, joyous and awake.
