  • Many a soul has been saved by a good brisk walk along a temperate sea on a cool day. It remedies both the restless, irritable condition and the numbed, exhausted one, enlivening tired dendrites as it calms them. It's a homeostatic process: the body finds its pace, the mind finds its rhythm with the body, the pulse quickens, the eye slows, the thoughts amble, sloughing off self-consciousness.

In breathing, scents find their way towards the interior. Towards memory, or towards desire. Along Scilly Walk in Kinsale, the air smells of brine, onion grass, and blackened oak smoldering in an iron stove. Many memories fused into one longing: continuation.
