  • Sometimes we have to clean up the wreckage of our past to move on with our lives. But the divine doesn't shout, "Get over here and clean up this mess !!" It calls in legions of angels with buckets and mops, grabs a broom itself and asks, "How can we help?" Now the divine in its infinite wisdom knows that opening the front door to a legion of bucket-bearing, mop-wielding angels could really overwhelm us. So it sends them one at a time as lawyers, doctors, policemen, ministers, trusted friends, social workers; their disguises are many. To the naked eye they may appear as nothing other than bad news ready to dump more trouble on our doorstep. But that's when it's time to get our faith-colored glasses. Through the lens of faith we can catch a flash of halo, a wisp of wing and, if we look closely, we often see a glimpse of the divine, broom in hand.
Now the divine never barges in. It always respects our right to choose who we invite into our homes. But it is persistent about ringing the bell. You'd swear it was willing to wait an eternity for us to answer. And if for any reason we can't get to the door, all we have to say is "come in" and before we know it we are surrounded by a comforting presence that leaves no doubt that we will never be alone again.
