  • I am writing and illustrating a children's alphabet book for my grandson, and my friends are teasing me that it will give him nightmares.

For the letter "F," I have a boy with a ferret hanging from his finger. The illustration is based on a true story: I went to visit my boss and her daughter had ferrets. She got one out to show me, assuring me that it was friendly, loved people, and didn't bite. As soon as it got close enough, it latched onto my finger. It bit clear through the finger, and would not let go. I jumped back, and the ferret was hanging from my finger.

The girl kept repeating, "He doesn't bite," even though he had clearly bitten me.
