  • Our Lady of Lourdes was one of the first catholic schools, along with Red Cloud Indian School, on the reservation back in the late 1800s. Many children were forced to convert to Catholicism and go to school like these. This was called assimilation.
Nowadays, people choose to go to catholic schools because they are the best education.
I grew up going to OLL and I even graduated from there. I loved it because I made new friends and I was able to form bonds with the people working there to help us better our education. Only a few people there kept me on track and taught me a lot that I still remember today. I always remember Marge High Horse, Bill Fearn, Wilbur Ferguson, and TJ Lynch.
People always were surprised I even could afford an education here because everyone else went to public or county schools. All the other kids were always saying OLL was too hard and too strict. I highly disagree because I got along just fine and so did others. Catholic school isn't as bad as it sounds from afar.
Growing up in this school was a privilege because I got the best education I could and I was able to prepare for high school. The teachers always taught us to have respect, generosity, and character. I was also taught about the Lakota values mostly because I grew up in a mormon family so I sort of didn't know too much about the culture.
I will always remember this school since it was part of my life and built the person I am today.
