  • Sitting on the BNSF Railway going from Union Station out to the Chicago suburbs, I listen in on conversations while I contemplate life and ride the ride.

A couple of men next to me are arguing the benefits of bottled water versus non-bottled water. This goes on for nearly an hour. Finally, I can't stand it anymore. I have to throw my two cents in. "Listen you two, here are only three simple facts about bottled water that I am aware of: 1. 2.4 million tons of PET plastic is discarded every year and between 26 - 41% of that is bottled water bottles. Our landfills are exploding with the things; 2. Compared to tap water, it takes over 1,000 times as much energy to both create and transport the average bottle of water; and 3. Plastic water bottles are shielded from sunlight in landfills, therefore it will take them thousands of years to decompose. Which leads me to believe tap water might be a better solution."

Both men stare at me. One raises his eyebrows and the other closes his mouth and blinks.

"Now, the facts on how much oil a train consumes is a whole 'nother argument. And since we're riding on a train perhaps we should discuss these stats. Care to join me in learning a little bit more about the environment? Perhaps you two would like to volunteer and help me clean up the earth a bit?"

Without pause the two men share a "damn this woman is crazy look" then get up and move several benches down.

Well, I guess that answers that question.
