  • Monmouth, Oregon was dry town until 2003. This history is not without contradictions. Growing up there, I heard rumors that even though you couldn't purchase alcohol in the town, Monmouth still managed to out-drink the neighboring cities. Many decades ago, if you were a local and you knew the right people, you could get a whiskey at the local hardware store.

    This short story is told by long-time Monmouth resident Scott McArthur.
