  • There's a convention on Navy Pier and my car is jammed full of photographer friends as we drive home on St. Patrick's Day 2010. As we get near the Chicago River we see glimpses of neon green. Squeals erupt from the back seat. "They dyed the river green!!"

I chuckle, "You mean greener than usual?"

There's a slight pause, then everyone starts shouting at once; "I want to see up close!", "You have to stop!", "It's GREEN for gawds sake!", "Is that safe for the environment?", "Stop the car!", "STOP THE CAR!"

"There is no 'side of the road' here and there's no place to stop the car and the traffic's insane right now," I respond.

A hand grabs my shoulder, "THIS IS ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNALISM! STOP THE FREAKIN' CAR!!"

"Well alrighty then, I'll stop the car."

I put my blinkers on and stop smack in middle of the busy Chicago street. Photographers explode out of my car running this way and that, cameras shooting everything. Less than 5 minutes later they were all back safely ensconced in my little car with happy smiles on their faces and no deaths or injuries.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day!
