  • Perhaps we’re just too close in nuclear isolation.
There’s no escaping this partnership embrace,
No room full of elders to chew, spit and compare.
Human beings are so vile, revolting habits, unevolved.
Snot-filled tissues trailing across the coffee table,
Dribbling while speaking, the plask-plask sounds of careless eating,
Hair in the bathtub, burping after meals,
Nervous finger-tapping or hair twisting and mouthing.

Or maybe too many belongings to clutter up our lives:
Dirty socks and underpants covering the floor,
Shoes piled high in the hallway to catch us in a tumble,
Papers not found, shrill voices raised, money ill spent,
Splitting opinions and heads and couples.
Too many expectations we might let down,
Too much choice, forever dreaming of the other path.
Too highly-strung, like an instrument over-tuned,
Ready to snap at the slightest chord.

Where do the San Kalahari women find refuge when their men begin to snore?
Do Yanomamos’ hair curl and head shrink when they fail at the hunt?
Do the Trobriand islanders prefer the camaraderie of the longhouses
To the ministrations of their lady-wife?

    In our slimmed down families,
    In our isolated houses,
It needs all our love, oh, so much love,
    To forgive and overlook.
