  • While in Egypt, I was especially looking forward to visiting Garbage City -- a settlement who's residents collect and recycle mass amounts of Cairo's trash. I have heard a great deal about the kindness of the people, the ingenuity of their recycling methods, and the sheer spectacle of so much garbage.

While there, we met a small group of workers. They were incredibly warm and welcoming. Some were bashful about being in front of a camera, others were excited. All of them were kind.

At one point, I began asking them questions about what they hoped for in Cairo. It is a question I asked often while on the trip and one that elicited a variety of responses: frustration, apathy, excitement, anger, anticipation. We listened to responses from people that ranged from protesters to senior citizens. With each response we learned more about the people and gained a wider perspective on the situation in Cairo. We left each conversation with a greater appreciation and hope for the surrounding community. We also left those conversation with a greater desire to keep listening.

And that's what happened when we were with Harbie.

He shared of his hope for the people of Cairo to feel safe, for new jobs to be created, for things to be made right.

All we could do was listen.

Perhaps, for that night, that's all we needed to do.
