  • Every Sunday night
    In Buenos Aires
    The dancers come
    In pairs and singly
    Along crowded streets
    Dodging dog shit,
    stepping over
    the ripe mounds of trash
    sprouting at every street corner.

    Through the velvet hour
    they make their separate ways
    to the dusty park.
    dappled deep with shadow,
watched over by the solemn former heads of state
fixed on pillar and on plaque.

    There a raised pavilion stands,
girdled round by an ornate rusting railing
Lit now by bare bulbs where lanterns once hung
Arched over a once polished marble checkerboard
Now worn by a thousand, thousand feet
Off to one side, everyday shoes kicked aside,
    Abandoned in a forlorn heap
    Forsaken for sparkling heels

    Here we watched the dancers
    take the stage.

    A young man
Bronzed hair swept up in a stiff crest
    Grey muscle t-shirt,
Baggy pants over shined and spotless dancing shoes
Leans his forehead against the cheek of
A woman with café con leche skin
purple harem pants and an orange strapless top
He grins with unabashed and unbridled delight
    She’s focused deep within.

A tiny lady claps the waist of her giant
as he lifts her round and round about.

    Here you closed your eyes
    and stepped away with me.
