  • I started my training as a literacy tutor recently.

    I have a lot to learn …

    How to teach an adult to spell using a variety of different learning methodologies;

    Grammar – a definite need for revision on my part in this respect;

    Tact – a new skill for me as I would never win an award in this area;

    How to dole out praise/confidence building/work on students self esteem without sounding patronising;

    Writing is like exercise – if you are not used to doing it regularly, your muscles ache very quickly;

    Learning styles (I am familiar with the theory here) – but totally at sea when it comes to the practicalities of implementation with a person who has problems with literacy;

    Patience (not always very strong in this area) Do no harm! The system has already failed the student; this failure can’t be repeated;

    Active listening skills (again, I could write the training manual here!) – I am guilty of not practising this on a regular basis;

    Appreciate that I cannot replace the lost childhood years learning and practicing the rules of the English language in the school environment in the 50 hours of teaching allocated to me;

    Goal-setting; motivation; creativity in lesson design and delivery, constant enthusiasm especially when faced with challenges (for example, very slow progress, lack of motivation in the student); negotiating learning contracts; administration.

    I HAVE LEARNT to value this gift of literacy given to me in childhood by loving parents and teachers who appreciated the importance of their place in my young life for that limited period of time.
