  • It was a dark and stormy night...three nights ago a neighboring house was struck and set ablaze by lightning. No one was hurt. The house was destroyed.

When I was thirteen our house burnt because of the old electrical wiring running across the attic. It was a bright sunny day so we were outside safe and happy until we noticed the smoke. No one was hurt. The house was destroyed. For years I would wear the skeleton key to the attic door around my neck, somehow trying to process the event.

At twentyone I was determined to get tattooed. I drew the key shape on some notebook paper and took it to a friend of a friend.

Twentynine now, I stare at the thin skin over my wrist and remember the impermanence of all things.
