  • His birthday was actually yesterday, March 12, but I procrastinated working on my thoughts about it. So, here I'm am, today, considering the 90th anniversary of Jack Kerouac's birthday.

Jack was the original road warrior, a label that forever carries on to influence art in so many corners of creativity - from the songs of Willie Nelson, Neil Young and Bob Dylan to the films of the Motorcycle Diaries to Little Miss Sunshine. Road trip stories are part of all of us. There's a little Jack in any of us who has ever taken a summer road trip with little more than a map and the rough idea of a destination.

Kerouac also loved trains - he hopped them, he revered the "hobos" who called them home.

This morning, these train tracks reminded me of Jack and all the roads, the tracks, the travels all of us are on, every twist and turn, every surprise, every beautiful soul we meet along the way.
