  • Formals banks do not exist in the area of DRC I was in, so one rainy morning we drove to the port to exchange some money, pulled our land cruiser over infront of a couple men sitting in plastic chairs with umbrellas, one of the men came to the window and asked what we would like? we replied money exchange. After a thorough inspection of our bills making sure their were no folds, knicks, creases, tears, and the date was satisfactory he disappeared into the market, returning with a medium size bag filled with tattered Congolese franc bits of tape and rubber glue held the currency together the smell of fish, gasoline, and soot wafted off each bill as we counted our exchange, and completed our transaction.
