  • When I started thinking about using this image, I was sure it was about focus, about the ability to see more than just the immediate future. I thought, as you get older you learn to see deeper into people, culture, the big picture.

As I examined the image, trying to decide where to crop it, how to direct your attention to my point . . . . . . . I found a new image that I had not seen when I shot it that day, or when I decided to select it for a cowbird image.

What seemed to be a still life setting with wine glasses, oil and vinegar vessels, salt and pepper, multi-colored table mats . . . . . . . infinite possibilities in line, mass, color, reflection, in focus, not in focus, but still possible.

    What had I missed?

Nestled safely in focus, protected by the stems, hidden in plain sight, a small glass with an unlit candle inside, and the words siempre lo mismo always the same.

Always the same, we always miss the obvious.
