  • I just returned to the States. I moved to Israel three-and-a-half years ago looking for a change and ended up staying longer than I expected.

    My first day back "home" I went to breakfast with my parents to a diner in our hometown. The same town my parents have lived in since I was born. The diner is new to me; it opened while I was away.

    I ordered coffee with tuna in a toasted pita. The most typical thing to order when you're not quite in the mood for breakfast, but not lunch either.

    The coffee tasted like America. Endless. More! More!

    The pita had a chemical taste to it which I thought maybe I was imagining, but it felt manufactured and inauthentic. As if every pita I tasted in Israel was wonderful - which it wasn't.

    A mix of comfort and familiarity with a slightly bitter twist.
