  • You're supposed to let people take your picture if you're nice. I'm not nice. I hate pictures of me, hate the false smile, the worry that the camera will show me to my worst advantage. When a six year old asks for me to pose, I do it. They are why I am here sweating in the dull, still heat of the South Dakota sumer, wearing a Wyoming hat, with a sweat-soaked bandana around my neck because to do otherwise would steal the joy and the learning and the creativity she is finding from this experience. So I smile for the camera even if I'd rather be photographing her.
