  • "And so The Snow Queen became a story about the need to seek
equilibrium, in our own lives, with the natural world, even within
the universe at large." Joan D. Vinge

Here's what I'd like from you: Send me a snowstorm

or a portable glacier (if there are any glaciers left)

or send ocean water you went diving for

from 34,000 feet down, in the Mindanao Deep,

or a cool, cool poem, one you wrote yourself,

or send a whole continent of ice, like Greenland

before it all melts into the sea, so I can

bury myself in blue ice and dream cool bluesy blues

deep blue fjord dreams of winter wonderlands.

Better yet, send a slow, cool dance of ideas,

or some Coltrane, Robert Johnson, or a cool hug,

heart to heart, like these words touching you now.

I would love it if you would send one of those

big refrigerators, the kind flower farms use,

filled with dozens of fragrant white roses,

where I can lie down on the cold stone floor

and dream of forests made of frost, trees carved

with Runes and the 100 Names for God,

If you can find one, send me an icy Sierra stream,

sparkling and clear, mossy, shadowed with trout,

fed by hidden springs high above timber line...

Send me the Complete Glacier Bay, Siberia,

    the Unabridged Antarctica, some penguins,

and The Book of Cool Forbidden Poems.

Thanks in advance! And oh yes!

Go down to your Bank & Trust of Coolness,

and write me a check, please,

in frosted glacier blue ink, for my ticket

to the Cool Side of the Moon: -283F!

    Frozen dreams are stored there:

I need to go and thaw out some of mine.

Wrap all this up in waterproof plastic,

and put it in a FedEx dry ice freezer bag,

Please make sure it gets on the next flight out!

I'll get it tomorrow, and I'll know who it's from.
