  • A mile or two, maybe less, maybe more, stands this palm tree. Walking along the beach last summer, I wondered what it was doing there all alone. Under strangely dark Californian clouds that kept the sun from warming the breeze that chilled my bare calves. Tall, strong, undistracted, solemn. Its leaves seemed to frown, pout, in sadness.
