  • "Come on let's make a get away..."

Farther than the eye of the camera could see, the road led out of Berlin. Although the cold sank deep into my veins, each shimmer of light made me smile: it was a Friday out of the office yet for the office.

It was one of these work trips I enjoyed - not the day-trip kind, the "stay the weekend kind", and pretend to work while you're actually wandering about an alien world.

I hadn't seen Berlin for years. It felt as solemn then as it had when I was 22.

I couldn't help hearing "Fade Together", the Franz Ferdinand song where Alex Kapranos sings "I look like I just jumped the Berlin wall".

And in the very last moments of it, you can hear birds such as I could on that instant when all the cars were far enough away.
