  • I learned to run from my high school art teacher.

    Mr. Bartman also happened to be the track coach and one day in art class he told us "making art is just like running--anyone can do it".

    I wasn't really very good at art, and indeed felt completely inadequate at pretty much everything else. But those were the words I somehow needed to help me put aside my insecurities and join the cross country team (though it took me a year--I didn't join until the following fall).

    Now here I am decades later and I call myself a runner--it's become part of who I am. However I don't ever call myself an artist, but I sometimes make art. And Mr. Bartman gets credit for teaching me that too.
