  • I connected with some of my former students over the vacation. I taught them all in the 7th through 9th grade and now they are sophomores in college. We decided to have lunch together at this bar that has a large selection of wings. We met at 12:30 PM on a Wednesday. I got there a little early to make sure we had a table. I am not the only one who knows about the wings. The boys arrived a few minutes after I did. They all looked great, and it was wonderful to greet them. The waitress came over and we all ordered sodas and water. She asked them for their identification, because the bar did not allow underage customers. There was a moment of silence as she finished her question, and it was also a moment of decision for the boys. It is not unusual for a 20 year old to have a fake ID, but no one reached for his on this day. The waitress asked me if they were my sons, and I replied that they were not, but a couple of them had been my advisors. A couple at a nearby table spoke up and said that they would vouch for a couple of the kids. The waitress decided to let us stay, and we had a great meal and even better conversation. No one mentioned the ID’s, but I felt very good about the respect they had shown me that afternoon.
