  • This year got off to a much smoother start than 2015 did. I woke up in my own bed (as opposed to the emergency room), with full facial function (always a good start), no signs of vertigo on the horizon (Yes!), and I’d had another good night’s sleep, thanks to my new C-Pap machine. I’m already several steps ahead of 2015, and the year’s not even a day old! Rock on, 2016!

For the second year in a row, I found myself involved in a food recall on New Year’s Eve, but this time, it got resolved early in the evening, before we even went out to dinner. Last year, it didn’t get resolved until New Years Day, and kept me up later on New Year’s Eve than I’d planned to be. I had a bad cold, and needed to get to sleep (last year).

We went out to our favorite little restaurant down the street, and sat at the Chef's table, like we always have since they opened about 8 years ago. We go early - 5:00. We made our reservation for this year after we ate there last year, like we always do. They had a lot of new wait staff this year. Our waitress charged us a $25.00 corkage fee for the $3.00 bottle of non-alcoholic sparkling water we brought to drink (which didn't even have a cork). I paid it, but circled it on the bill, and wrote, "Really?" The manager called us later and said he took it off our charge. It's a good thing - that might've been our last New Years eve dinner there, otherwise. New waitress - she didn't realize it was non-alcoholic. They only charge that for bringing your own wine. Dinner itself was delicious, as it always is, there.

This year, I was just so tired by 11:00, I went to bed. It was way past my bedtime! Second year in a row I missed the midnight thing on New Year’s Eve. I’ve gotten to where I really don’t care about that – a good night’s sleep is more important to me than being awake when the clock strikes midnight. Besides, it was already the new year somewhere in the world before I went to bed – that was good enough for me!

All in all, a nice easy start to the new year. I met with a new friend early in the morning, went out to a Peet’s coffee shop in town and hung out over a couple of mugs of Caramel Macchiato getting to know each other better, then just spent a relaxing, lazy New year’s day, pretty much doing nothing.

I hope everyone’s enjoying the new year, so far. Here’s to a basic low-drama year – I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for one of those, this year. I think I’ll leave the drama to the actors up on the stage. I’m just going to breathe, take a lot of walks, and live.

    Happy 2016, everyone!
