  • I had stepped out of the restaurant to take a call and was trying hard to hear the person on the line over the street traffic, when a woman cut me off. I didn't see her face at first, just a cell phone in her hand and the big dog next to her.

    "Excuse me", she said. "How do you spell 'holidays'?"

    I didn't have time to be surprised by the question. As I spelled the word out, she typed it into her phone.


    She walked away, with the dog in tow, still typing what I imagine was a holiday greeting that couldn't wait and had to be perfect.
