  • I dream I am visiting Robert Verney and am sitting in his living room and see a pile of books on a small table by the chair where I sit. I pick one of them up and flip through the pages looking at it. It’s a book of large glossy photographs, and in one section, which is full of salmon pink sheer curtains and veils, I find five or six pictures of me when I was 19 and used to work as a photographer’s model. I show them to Robert. He tells me he has seen them a number of times, but had no idea they were me. This is understandable on two counts: he barely knows me now, and I look very different than I did when I was 19.

Later, I excitedly tell other people how Robert Verney, who lives half a continent and an ocean away, has pictures of me in his home from a time long before we knew each other.

Later yet, I am applying pancake makeup, the same color as the curtains and veils in the photographs, for another photoshoot. It feels strange to put makeup on after 50 years without it.
  • This reminds me of a time, years ago, when I visited Cape Cod and saw, in the window of a gallery, a sculpture of myself from when I worked as a sculptor’s model.
  • This story is for Robert Verney. I have no idea why I dreamed about him last night.

Image: somewhere, I have photos of myself from when I used to model, but I do not know where they are. So this is a current picture, maybe for applying pancake makeup.
