  • Yesterday I brought two framed prints to the local public gallery for showing for the month. The theme is Natural Wonders. I couldn't decide what constituted Natural so I played it safe and chose Niagara Falls, photographed last September and the underground lake at the Luray Cavers in Virginia photographed a few years ago.

It is a kick seeing my photos hanging with the little square of description and price beneath it, but it is different from seeing my byline in print. That feels more legitimate. I am a writer, I am qualified, degreed, published, and CV'd as a writer, but I am not an artist like my sister or my nieces who are legitimate artists, painters. I just enjoy taking pictures. At some point I expect someone to tell me they are not good enough or too derivative or too postcard-ish, or boring or worse...

I unwrapped my photos with fear, expecting to be found a fraud, just like walking the stage to receive a degree... Waiting for "J'accuse!" with fingers pointed. Instead, a couple came to look and invited me to join the camera club they belong to... complete with lectures and juried monthly events. Too risky. I might be found a fraud sooner rather than later and I am so enjoying my stint as a performer, an artist.
