  • One of the guests was George, who I found out sometimes dresses up as a woman. George is not a transvestite and being straight, does not consider himself a drag queen. It's just something he does for fun. He and his girlfriend are both nerds which may or may not explain his habit of dressing up as Laura Croft on occasion. I didn't get a chance to talk to him very much, so didn't find out the hows and whys of his drag.

-a short excerpt from a journal of mine from March 2002, regarding a friend's birthday party.

George was the second straight guy I've met who had a female persona. Back in the early 90's I was friends with Sam who was on occasion Jasmine.

Sam was a fairly attractive, mid twenties, Latino man with long hair; a penchant for dressing in skinny jeans, black t-shirts, and leather jackets; and was inordinately fond of his soul patch. Not so fond however, that he didn't shave it off when he wanted to be Jasmine. Aside from lack of soul patch, Jasmine also never wore jeans or jacket, leather or otherwise. It would cover her up too much. Jasmine's dress sense was more "vampy sex kitten."

As Sam, when he wasn't "angry young Latino activist," talking about Chicano identity and politics, he'd be flirting with cute women. While Jasmine was a bit too flakey for politics, like Sam, she was also a huge hit with the ladies. Luckily for Sam, his girlfriend Mary didn’t seem overly concerned that her boyfriend spent time in a miniskirt chatting up other women.

Jasmine was not a constant, only making occasional appearances when he felt like having fun. One definition of fun being for Jasmine and Mary to hang out at trendy Lipstick Lesbian bars. Given that Mary was taller, tattooed, pierced, and wore jeans and leather jackets, they came off as a butch - femme couple.

I lost touch with both of them ages ago; approaching twenty years now. I doubt they are still together after all this time. Sam was a traditionalist in his idea of family, and wanting to be the head of a household with wife and kids and picket fence and dog, and that was not Mary's future. I suspect that Sam is married and a father, though I have no idea how Jasmine would or would not fit into that life.
