  • My mother was bipolar and tried three times to commit suicide. My aunts were depressed and alcoholics and I had my own share of Depression and wishes to die. As some of you know about 3 years ago my daughter - in - law hung herself. She could not cope with the schizophrenic hell in her mind anymore.

Many people around me have committed suicide and the issue is a huge concern in Mexican society. In our little town two individuals a week kill themselves and mostly they strangle themselves to death. In the Mayan communities Suicide is even higher and sociologists write their thesis about this trying to understand.

Most victims are young. As young as 13 and 14 years old.

I invited people from all walks of life yesterday to join into a group sharing about the subject of Suicide. Quite a number of people came and we had 3 hours of deep sharing. One couple had recently lost their best friend, an evangelical pastor, to suicide, because the man had fallen in love with another woman and could not bear the moral weight of this in front of his wife and little children. Another woman admitted that once, many years ago, she was planning to first kill her small children and then herself as the only way out of a violent marriage. Tears were shared and fears and many had had moments of planning their suicide. Maybe this is the hardest part of human life. Even with so much suicide happening the subject is still treated as a tabu, many people do not want to touch the subject, which makes it worse for depressed individuals or families of suicide victims.

What most impressed me was a young woman who told us that she works since decades in the Mayan communities with women. " There hardly anyone strangles himself to death, she explained, people drink poison, fertilizer and suffer often horrible pains for many days until they finally die. Afterwards another hell breaks loose: everybody from the close family to the whole community always blemes the mother for the suicide! The father might be an alcoholic, a violent person, the father can be a real monster or absent since forever, when once he abandoned the whole family: nobody ever blames the father for a suicide of a son or daughter!
